Designing With Ceramics

Any components that can be considered complete in the "fired" state will be cost effective. Most of the expense in manufacturing ceramic parts and components is in diamond grinding. If your design can be made to net/near net shape in the "green state",grinding costs can be reduced.

Keep in mind:

  • The industry standard tolerance for an "as fired" dimension is +/-1% or +/- 0.127 mm, whichever is greater, as there is approximately 20% controlled shrinkage when firing ceramics.
  • There is a 0.15 mm per mm camber allowance on as fired components and a 0.635 mm maximum radius or chamfer on all corners.
  • Diamond grinding can easily produce tolerances of +/- 0.15mm.Tighter tolerances within 0.01 mm can be produced on a cost basis.
